Particularly Hazardous Substances

Due to the hazardous properties of some chemicals (those that present unusual acute or long-term chronic health hazards such as carcinogens, reproductive toxins and toxic pressurized gases) used on campus, faculty and staff using or storing these chemicals are required to develop a written Standard Operating Procedure (SOP).

The SOP should be maintained in each laboratory where the chemical or hazardous substance is stored. Chemicals that present strong physical hazards such as explosives and pyrophoric compounds are also included in this category. EHS will evaluate the space you are considering, and determine if necessary ventilation, containment and utilities are available.
