Safe Drinking Water Act

The Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) was passed by Congress in 1974 to protect public drinking water supplies throughout the nation. At first the SDWA focused on providing safe drinking water at the tap. The law was amended in 1986 and 1996. These amendments enhanced the law by recognizing source water protection, operator training, funding for water system improvements, and public outreach. This protects drinking water from source to tap.

Georgia Southern monitors its use of water from our water tower through the Itron metering system. We have two wells on campus that are monitored electronically and all of the water that we pump is treated by a third-party firm that was hired by the university to handle our water system. Our water is tested for over 100 contaminants as prescribed by the Safe Drinking Water Act.
