Asbestos
Asbestos is a mineral fiber found in rock and soil that is used in building construction materials for insulation, and a wide variety of manufactured goods. Exposure to asbestos fiber has been linked to lung and respiratory conditions. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulates the management of asbestos and asbestos containing materials (ACM).
Georgia Southern University follows regulatory requirements and best practices to minimize or eliminate the risk of exposure to ACM on its campuses. Environmental Health and Safety department provides regulatory guidance and investigates environmental or safety concerns on all campuses.
Georgia Southern University manages ACM in-place by keeping these materials in good condition. When appropriate, ACM are removed during maintenance and renovation activities following EPA and the University System of Georgia procedures and practices.
